It was necessary for some, but she didn't like it. Magic Knights were a fearsome bunch of mages. Perhaps the masses appreciated that power, as it was on their side. But if there was one bad egg within their rankings, there was many. Not to mention, the chaos that they were capable of bringing....
Verena sighed as she passed through a forest, entering into the town of Hapshass. The stroll through the forest was quite lovely, but she didn't feel like dawdling further. A few wild animals had already tried attacking her during her venture into the town. Her magic by this point had been replenished, however, and so she was in good spirits. Still, she was as weary as she could be. Relaxed or not, she didn't know the people, and a port town meant plenty of opportunity to steal some coin.
And thus:
From her bag, she brought a book to her face as she strolled along the streets. She knew where the library was, as she'd been here a few times in the past. She'd heard some more books had been added to their library. It was a smaller one, at least in comparison to that in the royal capital, but...
A blue-haired figure entered the town of Hapshass, long hair fluttering gently behind her in its wake. It was her first time at the town, though she has visited other areas in the Common Region. Compared to some of the other places she has been, this was quite the welcomed change of scenery. Clear azure eyes took in the quaint shops, constantly roving as she searched for the library she has heard so much about.
The first library she has been was the Archives in the Royal Capital. As much as she loved that place, it was too far for her to travel to everyday, and she does go through books like water. She had also loved the bookstore in Sosshi, but again, it was quite a distance from where she currently lives in the Common Region, so she needed to find a new library or bookstore to spend her time in. So engrossed and caught up in her search, the young woman almost ran into someone.
"Oh!" She had her hands up in apology. "I’m so sorry, I didn’t see you th—" then she caught sight of the book that the other girl was holding. Her eyes instantly lit up. "What are you reading?" She cocked her head to the side and bent down slightly, trying to see the book title. Then, realizing that she was forgetting her manners, the elf gave a short laugh.
"My apologies! First things first. I’m Suna." She stuck out her hand, a genuine smile gracing her lips. It was not often that she met a fellow book reader, after all. Most people that she has met did not have the patience to even sit down with a pamphlet, much less walk around town with their nose buried in a book. "May I ask where you got that book? I’m new to this town and am looking for the local library. Would you happen to know where it is?"

It wasn't that she hadn't noticed the girl; after all, she used books as a sort of defacto mask when out in public to avoid stares. It also wasn't that she hadn't tried to get her attention; she was just too quiet. And thus, even though she tried to get out of the way, a collossion was almost inevitable if not for the breaks Suna put on last minute.
"N-No, I'm the one who's sorry..." the girl weakly said, pushing the book up ever so slightly until the blue haired girl inquired about the book. "Ah... well..."
Slowly, she placed the book lower to where she could speak to her. Verena's complexion had a healthy glow to it, an almost enviable sort. Her deep crimson eyes weren't able to look the stranger in the face either. Argh, how embarrassing this was. This girl seemed to have confidence. How enviable. If only she could be confident, too...
Wait, they were already moving onto introductions? She hadn't even had time to answer the girls initial question! Okay, first, take a deep breath. Relax. It wasn't as if this girl was a magic knight. She was probably just a normal traveler like herself. She didn't present herself like the Magic Knights she was familiar with at least. The girl bombarded her with question after question, but finally it felt like Verena had a chance to speak.
"Uhm... it's a book on golem theory and it's theoretical and practical applications out of combat. I've read the book over and over again to where I have it memorized, so I mostly just use it to cover up my face in public..." the girl said, slowly pulling the book back up over her face, before sighing and letting it fall. Evidently she wasn't sure what she wanted to do. Clearly not much of a social person.
"I've had this book for six years." She said that, but it looked in close to new as it could possibly get. "It was something I got when I lived in the royal capital. As for the library, I was heading there myself. Unless it was moved in the last year and a half or so, it shouldn't be that far. Do you um... want to follow me there?"

"No, no, I should have been more watchful of where I was going." Noticing the other girl trying to hide behind the book, Suna was reminded of how she used to be—incredibly awkward and timid in any type of social interaction. Though the elf would consider herself an introvert, there was also this paradoxical attitude she would have when around those who were even more shy. When she was around flamboyant characters, she would naturally shrink back into her shell. But when she was with those quiet personalities, she herself is emboldened to connect with them, as she understands how hard it is to reach out unless someone was there to encourage it.
"A theory book about golems? That’s fascinating!" The look on her face turned more curious. "Theoretical and practical applications out of combat? I didn’t think golems have many uses outside of combat. Actually, I don’t know much about golems at all." She confessed, a slight pink tint coloring her features. "I’ve only seen a few in action, but not much. I take it that it’s related to your magic?" She ventured to guess. The blue-haired femme had not seen what the other’s grimoire was, but she could feel that the mage was powerful. She would not be surprised if it was something high tiered, perhaps even on the same level as the dark mage she has recently been meeting.
"Wow, six years?" She studied the covers of the book. Indeed, it looked almost perfectly new, like it was just off the press. Her respect for this woman grew. It said much about the person, if they took such good care of a book. She was also of the same mindset, and it irked her when some people treated writings in such a casual and disrespectful way. Especially the old and ancient volumes, back when she did a job in the Grand Archives. They may be old and tattered, but that was all the more reason to give them the care and attention needed to preserve them. Hence, she was overjoyed to find one of a kindred spirit.
Upon hearing that her new companion was also on the way to the library, the elf beamed and clapped her hands together. Finding someone of similar tastes to her and who knew where the local library was—it was turning out to be a very good day. "Lead the way...erm, I believe I didn’t catch your name?"

"Actually, I sh-" she stopped herself. There was little to no point in trying to apologize over and over again. It'd simply circle around. Not to mention, if she apologied again, it'd be like spitting on Suna's good intentions. That might make it even worse, and Verena didn't want to do that. Still, the brunette couldn't put the blame on this on anyone but herself, no matter how Suna might have felt. ...Well, maybe some of it was to be blamed on her, but that wasn't important. Verena felt that as someone who was paying attention, the duty mostly fell on her to have moved out of the way to begin with.
"...Golems are creations of mana that respond to their creators will that can take on any shape," she began to say."When you think of it that way, there's a lot they can do besides fight. They can be used for hard physical labor that a human would otherwise struggle with, travel, et cetera. Unlike other types of magic, golems can be all purpose. And because golems can be made from any element, that also means the applications for golems are near endless."
When she finished her little lecture, Verena immediately turned a bright shade of red, putting her book up to her face. She had just rambled there. Her tone indicated how excited she was, and how much she loved golems. She clearly had a large bit of insight into applications of golems, but if she had this book for over six years, that'd make sense. She was clearly as informed as she was passionate about this sort of thing. Still, to let that show as thoroughly as it did a moment ago to a complete stranger was embarrassing. Someone like her was just better off staying silent.
Still... even if that was for the best, it was ruder to say nothing at all. Fidgeting awkwardly, even Suna could probably tell that Verena's mind was racing and a mess. She was trying to think of what to say or do, but couldn't come up with any answers. Her mind was akin to a ship having to sail through a storm without a light house in sight amidst a narrow pass. At least, that was the case until:
"Lead the way... erm, I believe I didn't catch your name?"
Oh. Verena hadn't introduced herself? She thought she did. Did she forget? Argh, her mind was such a mess, she couldn't remember! Sharing all that information with Suna also tipped her off to how much she loved golems. Well, no. It wasn't that bad--after all, Suna clearly didn't understand much about golems if she only thought they had combat practices. Not that she could blame her.
"V-Verena," she simply said in response. There was no point in introducing herself with her family's name. She had renounced that some time ago. It was clear she was unwanted and unloved, thus holding onto that name was as pointless as her constant anxiety and overthinking. But even if she had, it was very unlikely that she'd be familiar with it; it wasn't as if they were prestigious by any means. "If you'll come with me, then..."
Verena lowered the book, as she made her way down the street. She did look to see if Suna was still following. The girl was not a fast walker. In fact, she was surprisingly slow, and each step seemed to be a bit... difficult."...Sorry," she said all of a sudden. "I'm incapable of walking for long periods of time. I'd normally use a golem to help with that, but... I'd rather not do so in the streets of the city."
If her blue haired companion was willing to deal with that, they arrived some eighteen minutes after. The library itself wasn't a big one, which was why it hadn't come into sight. Still, it was at least better than nothing. Once there, Verena stopped.
"It never dawned on me to ask this until now, but...what type of books do you like to read?"

Suna nodded and listened attentively as the girl explained about the usages of golems, amazed at what she was hearing. She had grown up pretty sheltered in the Forest, and was a loner to boot. There really was so much she did not yet know about Clover Kingdom and the varying types of magic. However, she was eager to learn, and hoped her ignorance was not offensive. As soon as the other girl stopped talking, she jumped in. "That’s so interesting!" She exclaimed. "I didn’t know they could do so much! They can basically be servants, huh? Wow!" Her tone turned a little wistful. "My magic pales in comparison to yours! I can only control sound and aura." She shrugged, then waved her hands like she was brushing her magic aside.
"Ooo, Verena? Nice to meet you!" Her joy was brimming through her blue eyes. Then she followed her new companion, although she did note that the girl walked a little slowly. After the explanation, she nodded in understanding. "No problem! Walking fast tires me out anyways." The pace was actually perfect, as the elf was a short one—standing at a mere 5’2”, the other girl easily towered over her, and if she had been walking any faster, Suna would have to pick her pace up to a light jog. But this pace was perfect, and she could use this time to survey the town. It was a quaint place, and the other townspeople milling around all looked like intellectuals. Not a surprise, considering that the Coral Peacocks headquarters was stationed nearby and the squad was well known for their scholars and researches.
As they neared the library, Suna could barely contain her excitement. She had gone almost an entire week without reading a book, and for her, that felt like an eternity. Books to her were like water to her—an absolute essential to her everyday life. When Verena stopped and asked her a question, Suna stopped as well. "What books I read?" The blue-haired mage tapped her chin. "That’s a good question. Recently, I’ve been reading a lot of history books, those giant volumes about Clover Kingdom. Those are really interesting. Oh, and also those reference books about mythical creatures and their lore! Those are also very fascinating. But overall," she gave a light shrug, "I read just about everything! Encyclopedias, fiction, you name it! I read through them so fast that I usually don’t buy them...unless they’re really good, or some type of reference book."
Suna now realized that it was now her who was babbling, and cut herself short. It would not do to scare her new friend off with her long rambles. "Shall we go in?" She would extend a hand towards the entrance and slowly walk forward into the library, assuming that the other girl would follow. Entering the sacred space, the elf paused for a second and closed her eyes, breathing in the wonderful smell of old books and yellowing pages. She simply loved the smell of books and papers. It was like walking back into history. This was her refuge, her sanctuary, her haven from the world outside. In here, everything was possible.
After a few moments of appreciation, azure eyes opened and turned to find her companion. "What are you looking to read today? More books about golems? I’m pretty sure they have them here..." Her voice was appropriately hushed, since this was a library, after all. Seeing a librarian, the femme walked over and asked if they had any books of the said topic. A few moments later, she walked back to where she assumed Verena was still standing, a bright smile on her face. "They said they have a whole section dedicated to that over there," she pointed to a side of the library. "Want to check it out? Or do you have something else in mind today?"

"...You overestimate me," was all Verena could simply bring herself to say to the compliment. Paled in comparison? No, Verena's magic was useless. The fact her father couldn't ever acknowledge her, the fact her mother never could take her side. She hated them, but she hated them because she wasn't capable of surpassing their expectations. She couldn't reach a skill that would force them to love her. At the end of the day, she was nothing more than a girl that got lucky. But it was precisely because of that that she ended up on the route of wanting to learn as much about golems as she possibly could.
"...I can't be for sure about pure aura, curious as I might be about it, but a Sound golem should be viable. When we finish in the library, I could show you if you'd like--though, you'd have to teach me how to conjure up the element itself. I um... my elements are Carbon Matter and Summoner, for ease of terms. That is to say, I can make golems from many types of elements. O-Obviously, I need to learn how the mana flows, so it's a very tedious process..."
The long-haired bookworm's voice began to get quieter and quieter as she spoke. Did that count as bragging? She didn't know. She hoped it didn't. She didn't want to sound like she was stepping on any toes. Why was conversing such a terrifying prospect? It felt like her heart was about to burst right out of her chest. Careful not to overstep her boundries, while also downplaying her own capability. That way of life was safer. But when it came to the topic of golems, even if she didn't have any faith in herself, she had an overwhelming desire to try. A sort of pride, she supposed.
As her companion began to list the variety types of literature she consumed, Verena for the first time since meeting Suna couldn't help but let out a small giggle. "I'm glad," she simply said in response when she finished her little ramble, a faint smile present. "Though I mostly read fiction, I read a variety of things too. It's nice to have a fellow bookworm with me. History in general is one of my favorite things as well. You have excellent taste."
Once inside, Suna was nice enough to actually ask the librarian on her behalf where the books on golems were kept. It was a much appreciated gesture. "Thank you. I may also grab some books on sound mana, too. I want to learn more about it regardless. I may grab a story another time though."
Similar to Suna, Verena's voice was kept in check once inside the library, but in her case it was more like a whisper. Still, it was loud enough to be heard. Unfortunately, the issue she always encountered now came back to haunt her: too many books.
There were five books in total she wanted to read and go over, all of which were a pretty good size. That meant it was diffiult for her to cary them. Still, with a bit of a struggle, she managed to get to the table, and carefully put them down despite it was clearly struggling for her. The moment she got the books securely on the table, she plopped down, panting. It might have just been books, but they were still quite thick. Even still, it was obvious her constitution didn't match her apparent age.

To the girl’s modesty, Suna only waved a dismissive hand at it. "No, no, don’t let others make you underestimate yourself." Her blue eyes looked straight at the other’s crimson ones. "Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise." Her tone was dead serious. The elf herself had suffered from verbal attacks ever since she was young, so she knew what it felt like being ridiculed for her uncommon magic. It was only recently that she herself had broken away from that belittling mindset she grew up with, so she understood the struggles of looking down on her seemingly useless talents.
"From where I came from, sound and pure aura were seen as useless. But once I came out here and learned more about other’s magic, I found out that there is so much more to my elements than I realized." She stretched out her arms wide. "And I’m still learning about them, believe it or not. One would think I have it all figured out, but unfortunately I haven’t." Her mouth curled up to a wry smile.
Indeed, it was only recently that she had discovered another aspect of her magic that she did not know before. She had been fighting an aroma mage, someone from her past, and after seeing the extent of the other’s power, researched into it. She realized that anything that affects the five natural senses is something to be wary of. Everyone depended on the five senses in one way or another, whether in battle or in everyday living. Since her primary magic was related to the sense of hearing, it gave her an advantage. However, she has yet to understand all of its capabilities—perhaps the only one limiting her powers was herself and her ignorance.
"Summoner? Wow, so does that mean you can summon anything from...well, anything?" The elf leaned forward in curiosity and anticipation. "Yes, I’d love to see it! Maybe later? I’m excited to see what you can do with my magic, and I bet I can pick up a few tips and tricks from you! Maybe even ideas for new spells...hmmm..."
Hearing her companion’s similar taste of literature, Suna was tempted to let out a little whoop. She held it back, however, since they were now in the library. "We’ll get along beautifully then." Seeing how the other girl quickly picked out five books, the elf quickly skimmed through the shelves. Hmm...what do I want to read today... It did not take long for her to grab a few titles that caught her eye. She carried her own load to where Verena was, and was pleased with the satisfying thump! of books on the table. She laid them all out on the table—four in all. "Hmmm...which one should I start with?" She murmured to herself. Then she sighed, and closed her eyes. She let her finger sweep across the choices before, and stopped it randomly. "Mythical lore it is."
Seeing how the other girl was standing there, the elf pulled a chair for her and for herself. "Get comfortable." She smiled, then sat down and relaxed. As soon as she propped the volume open, she was lost to the world of magical fancies, ancient beasts, and heroic deeds.

"Don't let... others make me underestimate myself?" Verena slowly asked, head tilting as she did so. The girl was clearly speaking from experience. They had a lot more in common than simply books. ...Well, she was an elf. Her ears were exceptionally remniscient of that ancient race, even if she wasn't pure by this point. No doubt she'd faced exceptional discrimination just on the basis that people were people, especially nobles. There were probably other factors that she was unaware of, but she couldn't be expected to know everything, especially with a girl whom she had just met.
"...I apologize, but that request is..." The girls eyes darted to the ground, her voice trailing off. That request was impossible. In fact, it was quite accurate to say by this point that it had just become a part of her, an extension of her own identity. She didn't grow quickly enough to force her father to recognize her. To Verena, that just meant even with all of her good fortune, she simply had to become much, much stronger. But she refused to fight to do so.
Becoming the leading expert on golems wasn't necessarily a dream for her, but she was confident that she was someone who could offer a very unique perspective in that area due to her Magic at the very least. She simply loved golems and wanted to learn and research new ways to enhance and create more golems. At least they never hurt her. Betray her. They would always be there for her when she willed it. There was nothing more comforting than that in this world.
Still, when Suna changed the topic to discussing her elements and how they were viewed, a look of frustration crossed Verena's expression. She'd seen that type of discrimination time and time again in her travels, and every time she did nothing. She didn't have the strength to change anything. Even if in some moments she might have been stronger in terms of magic usage, she was not someone who wanted to fight. No, her main source of weakness was being weak in heart.
But that was why it was so relieving for her to hear that Suna had managed to learn more about her magic. Suna seemed like a genuinely good person whom shared much in common with Verena. Perhaps that was another reason Suna wanted Verena to cheer up and have more confidence in herself, and perhaps that was why she felt frustration at the early part of the girls story. She wasn't entirely for sure, but what she did know was the answer to the following question that the blue haired girl asked.
"...Well, yes, I suppose. But like you, I have a long ways to go. There are many elements that all derive from one another, and there's probably even more that are unknown. It will take a long, long time before I learn all of them, if I ever do at all. So like you, I have much, much to learn."
The girl let out a content sigh. To another mage, the idea of dying before you could see your magic reach it's fullest potential might have come off as a terrifying perspective. To Verena, however? It just meant the end of her responsibility. She didn't fear dying before her work was complete. Maybe because she hadn't gotten any work done. "...A sound golem would be very beneficial. At my current level, I can't quite make it the way I'd like, but imagine a golem being able to speak for someone who otherwise lost that ability. Due to the nature of sound, the golem wouldn't be able to be seen, though it would still be able to be sensed. Either way, this would give that person the feeling of power again without having to rely on someone else speaking for them, should their wound not be able to be healed up for whatever reason. A mage may have to make the golem for that person, but it'd still be the injured person's own words."
She said this quietly, after she finished reading one of the books on the sound element. She had indeed gotten quite comfortable. These chairs were just as good as ones you'd find in the noble realm. Well, that was to be expected of a port town, but it was nonetheless surprising. They weren't quite this comfortable last time she was here. Not that she was going to complain about it.
"...Before it gets too late," Verena suddenly added again. "...do you want to check these out, then teach me?"
template by ♡ hover made by remi of rillago![newclass=.cupidchu]width:500px;height:250px;overflow:auto;opacity:0;transition-duration: 0.9s;-webkit-transition-duration:0.9s;[/newclass][newclass=.cupidchu::-webkit-scrollbar]width:5px;[/newclass][newclass=.cupidchu::-webkit-scrollbar-thumb]background:#ed3930;[/newclass][newclass=.cupidchu:hover]align:center;opacity:0.7;background:#000000;transition-duration: 0.9s;-webkit-transition-duration: 0.9s;[/newclass]
Suna did not know about the other girl, but she had grown up with others belittling her. The feeling of being bullied and criticized over every little thing—she was familiar with that feeling all too well. That was why she was so determined to make sure that others would not have the same negative experience, at least from her end. Whatever Verena had gone through, the elf felt for her, but at the same time, still retained a respectful distance. Though curious, she was not the type to pry. Everyone had their own secrets and past, after all. She was no exception.
"Aye, I don’t think there’s any end to learning." Blue hair flew as its owner nodded adamantly. "Especially about ourselves. Just that alone would take a lifetime!" Though she herself was naive in most things in the world, she had learned to be observant. Suna would also guess that behind the facade that the other girl had, the latter seemed to have a highly intelligent mind, much more than she would let on.
Listening to the concepts that her sound could possibly do, she was once again struck by how imaginative Verena was. Whether the latter thought so was another story, but in the elf’s eyes, she was utterly fascinated by those ideas. "I see..." There was no way the other girl knew, but in that recent encounter with the witch from her past, Suna had also lost her voice for a short while. During that time, her sound had ‘spoke’ for her; though without words, music had still been able to convey her message and intent fairly well. If a golem was able to actually speak for her...well, that would be incredible!
"Ah, I think my musical instruments are like what your golems are to you. My harp and guzheng, they are kind of like my magic wands. I can’t really control my sound magic without them." If they were not in the library or in any public area, Suna would have summoned her harp to show the other mage. "They’re like an extension of myself," she explained. "I spent years practicing on them, so they almost seem like friends to me. I imagine it’s something similar with your golems?" She left her guess open-ended, as she was not sure if she was on the right track.
"Of course!" Suna did not know how much time had passed, but she was willing and looking forward to seeing how the other girl could transform her magic. "But I think you’ll be the one teaching me things." She beamed. "Do you want to check these out now, or do you want to finish reading one more book?" Whatever the girl decided to do, the sound mage would not mind. Spending time with a kindred spirit was good enough for her.

Verena was quite grateful for Suna's lack of questions on the matter. It was quite obvious to anyone that based on her reaction it was quite painful to the brunette; she was not willing to talk about it, especially to a stranger, even if this stranger was someone she wanted to have faith in, wanted to believe in. That she wanted to be friends with. More than anything, what she wanted was...
Well, it didn't matter what she wanted. No matter how well one could know another, humans were a creature that could not reliably be predicted. Golems, however... They were an extension of her own will. Loyalty that could be made. Love that could be fabricated. Hope for her future research. In that sense, she was lucky. But the fact she felt so strongly about golems due to her fear of growing close to another... she was aware of how bizarre it was. Even still, that didn't invalidate her feelings on the matter.
The renounced royal nodded in agreement though. "'Life is a journey, in many ways. The journey from birth till death, and the journey of understanding oneself. The foundation that is the 'self' shapes our journey to the end as it is our own unique perspective that dictates how we view our lives' work at the end of things.' That's from one of my favorite works, 'HUMAN'. Life really is just a neverending circle of being able to learn things, even about oneself. I think that's something to be treasured," she said, a faint smile presents on her lips.
Verena listened with earnestly as her companion talked about how her sound magic worked when an idea hit her. Throughout the entire conversation, she'd been trying to figure out how exactly to go about a sound golem. Indeed, if it lacked a physical form, trying to hit it might be a bit difficult, as it wouldn't be easily seen. However, because it lacked a physical form, trying to use it for anything that she sought would prove difficult. But golems were nothing if not constructs of the element. That also means it could theoretically be possible to craft a golem of an element that was not necessarily visually what it was, but rather made up of material that could be used to invoke it.
"I thank you very much for that story, Suna," Verena said. "Because of that, I'm confident I'll be able to show you a fine golem. It could be used to gather people's attention in an instant with what I'm imagining, should I be able to learn it, at least."
Indeed, though Verena didn't have any reason to believe she couldn't learn it, it wasn't as if she had any reason to believe she could, either. "Let's check them out. I'm eager to get to work. Because as you mentioned a bit ago..."
"...yes, I think of my golems as my friends, too."

What better place to talk about life and philosophical topics than in the very center of resource and learning? Suna had put her book down, listening in rapt attention at the other girl. "Learning keeps life interesting, too." The elf pursued her lips as she sank in her chair, deep in thought. "Otherwise, I imagine it would be quite boring, if one knew everything that is there to know." At a certain look from a nearby reader, she ducked her head and lowered her voice. She had to remind herself to keep her voice appropriately hushed. "I agree, being able to discover new things is a treasure, something we shouldn’t ever take for granted."
Suna was quite satisfied with the conversations that she was having. It was not often that she got to converse about such things, if at all. There was just one little thing that she did not think the other girl realized. "My sound element can actually be seen," she smiled gently. "In fact, I believe that only those with four-leafed grimoire can have invisible attributes. Unfortunately," she unstrapped her grimoire from her side and held it up for her friend to see, "Mine is only a gold tier grimoire." She slid her precious grimoire back and patted it. To any mage, their grimoire was probably their most beloved possession, and she always took good care of it.
At Verena’s agreement to check the books out and get to work, Suna got up and swooped all her books up. "Sounds good!" The elf walked over to the counter, and after going through all the necessary motions and info swap with the librarian, walked out of the library carrying her beloved loot. Assuming the girl had done the same and had also made her way outside the building, she would turn towards her companion. "On the way here, I saw a fairly enclosed place not too far from town. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to cast any of my spells here in town!"
The elf would then walk back towards where they had come from, keeping her pace slow out of consideration for her companion. After leaving the town, they would follow a little path on the outskirts, leading them to a clearing. The tall trees around them provided privacy, and was far enough away from civilization to attract any types of unwanted attention. Catching sight of a large rock, Suna brushed its surface from any debris or dust before carefully laying her books down.
She tilted her head, trying to gauge the other girl’s condition. "Need a little time to catch your breath? Or are you ready to go?"

Verena nodded her head in agreement. It did keep things quite interesting. There was also, perhaps, a bit of sadness in the fact it was impossible. But that was just the human part of her, that nature that simply disliked she couldn't do something. It was a nature she always ignored, but was still woven into her being as a result of generations of people that came before her. That stubborn trait was as synonymous with human kind as descrimination, she felt, for better or worse. But that was why there was always a next generation, to carry on the wishes of the previous. When one looked at it through that lens, then humans had already achieved a sort of immortality, even if not in it's most literal sense.
Much like Suna, the crimson eyed girl did enjoy the conversation. It made her want to know Suna better, and maybe, just maybe... they could be friends. They had a lot in common, and Verena truly did enjoy the conversation with the girl thus far. The possibility did exist that-
...No. It did not. It was safer for her this way. Verena knew better than to put that type of faith in others. She wasn't afraid of others in the same way she was of Magic Knights, but she still felt it in her best interest to keep her heart guarded. To have another person turn their back on her was more than what she could handle. That was another reason she traveled around so much. To prevent herself from growing comfortable and making friends. Even if her body didn't allow her to do much, she did what she could.
Suna explained more about her magic, and her grimoire, clearing up a mix-up Verena had. "Ah... sorry," Verena began to say. Urk. How embarrassing to be wrong on something like that. The book that discussed the sound element didn't even mention that it'd be visible. Well, that should have been expected from something that wasn't a four leaf grimoire.
"...what a pretty grimoire," she said when it was presented. That shade of deep blue was particularly intoxicating, but the intricate gold border on the back and cover in particular was also delightful.
She wasn't sure if she should show hers off or not. Would that be weird? Would the girl think she was looking down on her? Would she think it would be some sort of mockery? No matter how she thought about it, she'd be showing off her grimoire in time, anyways. Her hand reached for the book, held in the specialty holster that all mages owned to carry their grimoire that was fashioned akin to a belt.
"I'll show you mine when get there." This was probably for the best. She didn't want to go causing a scene in a public place. Four leaf grimoires would have that effect on a person, after all. An enclosed space that could be used for training and learning magic made sense, not just for those reasons, but to prevent drawing any unnecessary attention. That was far more in accordance with Verena's personal preferences, anyways.
As far as getting there, however...
Verena was clearly struggling. The weight of the books combined with the walk made it seem like she was going to collapse at any moment. Her face was beat red, she was sweating profusely, and she was breathing quite hard. She clearly couldn't answer as easily as she would have liked to have in this instant. When her breathing managed to slow down, however. "...S-Sorry... I'm uhm... g-good now."
Even among mages, especially nobles, Verena's physical condition was awful. Incredibly so. She was aware of it, and quite embarrassed by it, but it couldn't be helped. Not anymore, at least. The curse had simply nurtured itself throughout her entire body, enfusing itself with her own mana. Healing magic no longer recognized it as a curse, but simply as a matter of life. It would not take her life, but it would certainly complicate it.

To activate this restraining spell, Suna plucks out the melody on her right hand while tampering the full sound by lightly muffling the strings with her left hand, indicating its restraining effects. As the music flows from the instrument, the sound takes form of a small flowing stream that is 1 meter in width. It snakes towards the enemy and spreads in a circle (1 meter in diameter) beneath each target's feet. When in contact with its target(s), the aura spreads upwards to bind movements and to slow down their speed by -2m/s. This will only affect the first [1 + (Control/10)] targets in contact, one additional target will have their speed debuffed by -1m/s, and any other targets will not be affected.
This binding restraint is an AoE effect. The spell only physically affects the enemy, and cannot restrain any spoken or verbal spell castings of retaliation. Vampiric Magic's mana drain will only be applied to the two targets of Suna's choosing. To sustain the bind, Suna must keep playing in ritenuto, the tempo gradually becoming slower and slower. The slower and calmer her music is, the more effective the bind. Any distractions to her state of mind will affect success of sustaining the spell. The restraints have the health of junior rank spells - if dealt damage that are equal or above the spell's rank, the restraints will dissolve and be dispelled.
This restraining spell is not limited to which instrument she uses, as the technique is the same.
[Optional] Summoning An Instrument: If Suna does not already have an instrument on hand, she may summon her harp by humming a C (262hz). Her harp is 33"x19"x6" / 83x48x15cm.
Suna could tell that the other girl had a lot of things in her mind. Was that how she looked like when she herself was deep in thought? Meeting Verena had almost been like meeting a reflection of herself. Even though they were different people with different upbringings and different pasts, their struggles were similar. In the end, everyone struggled with their own battles; some scars are just more deep than others.
The elf made a dismissive motion with her hand. It was quickly becoming a habit as of late. "It would have been pretty amazing if sound magic was invisible, like what we think, but unfortunately it’s not." She herself had thought sound was something that could not be seen, but that perspective was changed after she first discovered how to control it. "It was exciting though, the first time I found out how to use my magic. It felt like I was suddenly someone, you know?"
She was also about to ask about the other girl’s first experience with magic, but bit her tongue instead. Uncertain whether it would trigger some negative memories, she thought it prudent to save the inquiry for later in the future, or whenever Verena decided to share it with her. Trust was not something built overnight, after all.
Once there at the outdoor space, Suna’s eyebrows furrowed. She should have offered to carry the books for the girl, but then again, she did not want to offend her. "Here, let’s sit down for a minute then." She plopped down on the grass, and patted the spot next to her. Whether the red-eyed mage would accept was up to her, but the offer was there. The blue-haired elf drew her knees to herself, leaned back a little, and closed her eyes. The edges of her mouth curved upwards to a soft smile, and she sighed in contentment.
"You know what would be perfect here? A picnic. Some sandwiches, fruits, and iced tea..." Her eyes flew open. "Ah, what would I give for some nice and cold tea right now!" The elf had a thing for tea, and it was her go-to drink. Unfortunately, there was nothing like that around where they were, so she would just have to be content with imaging her favorite beverage.
Suna stretched out her legs. "Well, even if we don’t have food, at least we can have a little soothing music." She hummed softly, and once the pitch hit exactly 262hz, her Celtic harp materialized in front of her. She reached out and grasped it, feeling the familiar feeling of worn and polished wood. It had been with her for a long, long time, much like a dear friend. In fact, her musical instruments were probably the only ones she could call as true friends. Which was sad, in a way, as they are inanimate objects and not living people, but Suna considered them a part of her. She was sure that swordsmen would consider their swords a part of themselves, and felt likewise about her instruments.
Slender fingers brushed through the strings, starting a soft and graceful melody. Her sound magic rippled and flowed from her instrument, like a stream flowing out of her harp. Her left hand tampered with the strings, muffling some of the notes as she played out the tune with her right hand. This was Ritenuto, her restraining spell. It was the base of everything she did, especially in battle. If directed at a target, her magic would flow up and encircle the target’s legs, restraining them and debuffing their movement speed. However, since she was not directing it at anything now, her magic simply flowed around in an area, like a small pond of sorts. Almost all of her spells were various hues in blue, and this spell was no exception.

When the two had gotten comfortable, Verena let out a content sigh, nodding her head in agreement, both in regards to the topic of a picnic, and a . "Tea is great. I'm more partial to green tea, however." Fitting that one who could transform all of nature itself was more partial to the more organic of all tea beverages. She wasn't going to bring up her favorite type of drink, however. It might best not to, in the off chance it might ruin the image the blue haired girl had of her.
The moment that Suna mentioned music, Verena's soft and tired expression suddenly grew quite serious, despite the other girl desiring it to be 'soothing'. But to Verena, this was a chance to learn a new type of golem. That was something that deserved her fullest attention. Every spell prepared, cast, and readied was something to study. Verena's sensory detection wasn't perfect, but it was sharp enough to detect how mana was flowing when she wasn't fighting, provided she put all of her efforts into that.
If she was to guess, Sound was likely related to Wind based mana. And though she hadn't learned how to summon wind golems, she did have extensive research into the four main elements, the building blocks for all others. Unlike earth golems, trying to condense the mana and give it a rigid shape would go against the flow of that mana. To give form to the formless. That was her objective in this training.
Humming was enough to summon the instruments. That meant it was possible that Sound based Spells didn't require a specific phrase said, but she very much doubted that simply any sort of sound would work. A certain pitch? No, the humming grew to a certain volume before the harp appeared. Control, in a different sense of the what it meant to the standard mage, was crucial it seemed for something like this.
Through this exchange, a harp appeared, and Suna didn't waste any time to get started playing, much to Verena's silent frustration. She was trying to take all of this in at once, and it was taking much of her focus to analyze what she had already. Now, she was being thrust into this right off the bat. Of course, she didn't blame Suna. The girl was just trying to get Verena to relax. She knew that was her goal.
As the woman thought, the magic flooded the area similarly to wind magic, though unlike the former, this fanned out in all directions instead of one focal area. That was the true nature of sound magic then, wasn't it? The blue that filled the area was quite lovely, captivating even, but the music that was being played was even more so. It was distracting and ruining her focus, but it wasn't as if she could really get upset over that, either. When the music dyed down, however, Verena took a deep breath, and...
"Tell me if I'm right thus far. Sound magic is related to wind magic. Even creation magic spells should either allow the magic to be 'free', even when made into a specific shape or should allow the mana to be able to run free like with an instrument as in this case. You direct the mana with some sort of noise, such as humming, by reaching a certain volume, you can use a form of creation magic that allows you to create an instrument. That instrument is used as the basis for your other Spells with the proper element. I was hoping I could try to understand more, but... the music and magic were too pretty. I got distracted...."
