“When you spend so long trapped in darkness, you find that the darkness begins to stare back.”
Hans had found himself in the town of Hapshass. The mercenary was sitting on a bench by the town's harbor with his recently acquired longsword, Raven's Grasp leaning against it. The man was looking down at the ground while his hands rested on his lap. It has been days since the fall of Kikka, the day that he and a few others failed to stop the Daemons that have taken over there. Despite how long it's been, those events still lingered in Hans' mind. No matter where he went, the merc would always overhear someone talking about it. It was also growing harder for the man to sleep, evident by the bags under his eyes.
He would have nightmares...about the two children he nearly murdered due to the daemon's trickery. Even while awake, these thoughts tend to haunt him. Just thinking about it made the man grit his teeth, his hands grabbing onto his lap in frustration. The man has a code, to never harm children. Being a mercenary, the dark mage will take just about any other job...except anything that would put a child at risk. The man was now shaking lightly, causing some passerbys to briefly glance at him but not bothering to stop to see what was up. A mixture of guilt and worry consumed the man. Are this children alright? Of course not...Not while those Daemons still have Kikka in their clutches. No one there is safe. What if they manage to expand their influence throughout the kingdom? Then more people would be in danger....Suna would be in danger.
Hans needed to got back there, and make things right...but for now he needed to focus on other things, like getting back into searching for jobs.
With a few deep breathes, Hans managed to calm himself before standing up from the bench. He placed his dark sword back in its sheathe on his back. The man's cosmic necklace started to glow a bit, catching him off guard at first. He gently rubbed the obsidian like jewel, a warm smile forming on his face. With a light nod, Hans started to stroll down a path until he came across a flier posted up on the side of a building. "Hm?"
"Help Wanted, Material Gathering"
Those were the words that caught Hans' attention. Seeing as there are a few more of these fliers posted up, Hans decided to take one down and read it. Something about getting some items for a witch? It had a yul reward and that there was enough to further intrigue the merc. With another silent nod, Hans folded up the paper and followed the directions on it, eventually leading the man to this witch's house.
Approaching the door, Hans gave it a knock, and waited there, looking through the paper again while he did. He didn't have to wait long however as he heard someone fiddling with the doorknob. "Just a second." The door opened, revealing a middle aged woman who had a baby sleeping peacefully in her hand. "May I help you?" The woman asked, not sounding rude, but curious. "I'm here about this." The merc held up the flier and the witch squinted at it before raising her brows. "Oh right, that!" The woman smiled and nodded. "So you're taking up my offer then? How kind...Though I'm guessing you're only doing this for the reward?" The woman smirked teasingly, causing Hans to shift his eyes to the side.
"Uh..." Words were escaping the man, a common occurrence for the poor guy. "Relax, I'm just teasing." The woman grinned while Hans rubbed the back of his head nervously. "Hmmm, you certainly have a strong mana on you, but I'm afraid this isn't a task you could go at alone." The woman claimed before looking off into the distance. Hans raised an eyebrow and crossed his arms. "Is that so?" Seems like this won't be an ordinary gathering of materials then. Question is, is there anyone else currently willing to take this on?

Chishio found herself in a witch's home after finding a mission to do.
"You will not be allowed to do this alone." she'd tell her firmly as the Magic Knight entered her home.
"Ok whatever," she'd sigh.
After introductions were made, Chishio would be commanded to sit somewhere else. Despite her tart behavior, she'd still be welcomed warmly by the witch.
In her living room, Chishio would find herself comfortable. She'd be offered bland tea cookies. But that's what they ate back in the day after all. Then be offered lemon water! Alright, this is something she could work with. The girl lounged on the couch as the witch vanished to answer the door once more.
The young girl sat in silence as the woman left to answer the door, alone in her thoughts but only momentarily.
She could hear a conversation going on in the background towards the front door.
"Is that so..." a male's voice entered her eardrums.
Chishio would pop on her feet and walk over through the room towards the door.
The witch covering most of the male's physique as his front was turned towards her and Chishio. Chishio would come to stand aside the mission giver and eyed him up and down. Hands on her hips.
"This is Chishio. She's a Magic knight and will be assisting you today, young sir." the witch would gesture towards her.
"Would you like anything while I explain the mission? Chishio has been making herself quite at home here."
"I mean, you gave me food. This isn't my home...." Chishio bluntly put not at all catching the woman's statement.
The witch would guide the pair towards the living room area and tell them, "Sit, you and you. Here." she'd point to the wide couch and Chishio sat where she did once before. The witch would leave the room momentarily.
"What is your name supposed to be?" she'd abruptly ask Hans and lay her arm against the couch arm rester while still supporting her head, "Why take this job? Does it interest you or something? Like, you kinda look like a mercenary or something."
And just as Hans would answer her, the witch popped up again with a tray of lemon water and more of those bland as hell tea cookies. The witch would smile at them both and take a seat across from them in a lounge chair.
Chishio took a deep breath she had a feeling the witch was going to begin to preach to them.
“When you spend so long trapped in darkness, you find that the darkness begins to stare back.”
Hearing footsteps come from behind the witch, Hans glanced over to see another woman walk up to them. She appeared to be a bit younger than the witch, and had elven ears. "Uh..." Hans blinked a few times with a puzzled expression. The witch then spoke up again, grabbing the dark mage's attention as she introduced the elf. A Magic Knight? Hans would give the elf another look, and if she is wearing it, the man would quickly notice her Golden Dawn Mantle. The man was no stranger to working with Magic Knights but this would only be the second time he teamed up with someone from this high caliber squad.
"No thanks. I'm good." Hans replied to the witch's offer. He then eyed the woman named Chishio again as she made her little comment. She definitely seems to have no problem with being blunt. As the two ladies stepped back into the house, Hans exhaled out of his nose. Hopefully she won't turn out to be too stubborn. With that, Hans followed them in.
The witch gestured for the two mages to take a seat on her couch before heading off to fetch more refreshments. Hans took his sheathed greatsword from his back and gently placed it on the side of the couch before sitting down on the other end from the elf. Hans was looking around at first, and was just about to fiddle with his necklace again until he heard the elf speak up. "Huh?" Hans looked over to her. "It's Hans." he plainly said, and the girl wasted no time throwing more questions at him, making him look a little caught off guard. Was it really that obvious that he's a merc? Considering that he's been doing this for a few years now it shouldn't be that surprising. "I'm just doing this for the yu-" Before he could finish, the witch came back with refreshments in hand. "Well now." The witch took her seat across from the two and placed the tray onto the table between them.
"This should be enough for you both, in case you change your mind that is." The witch said, looking over to Hans as she said the last part. The man simply nodded and with that, the witch clasped her hands together and placed them on her lap, letting out a sigh. "You see, I specialize in brewing all sorts of magical potions, but..." she then gestured at her baby who was fast asleep in his crib nearby. "I can't really go out an get the necessary ingredients for my potions at the moment. I would ask my husband but..." The witch paused with a look of longing on her face and a slight frown, causing Hans to raise an eyebrow. The woman then shook her head before looking back up at the two, trying to get a warm smile going again.
"Nevermind that. Anyway, these are the items I need." The witch then held out two small pieces of paper and handed each of them one. Hans would politely take the paper and read it over. Just reading the first item on the list was enough to make Hans know that these items were all gonna be bizarre. "Now I know what you two must be thinking. "This should be simple enough to do alone, so why do I need a partner?" Hmmm well, some of these items might require a bit of...fighting." The witch smiled sheepishly. "Ah." Hans looked over to his elven partner then back to the woman.
"You will be able to find what you're looking for in the forest nearby." The baby could be heard fussing a little now, seemingly having woke up not too long ago. "Oh dear." The witch got up and went over to her child to comfort him. "You two may head out whenever you're ready. Oh, and do be careful when handling the items." The witch claimed as she picked her baby up. "Right." Hans gave a nod before standing up, picking his sword up as well. "I'm gonna head out now." Hans said as he looked over at Chishio. Before he could step out the door, Hans took one more glance at the witch, gently hushing her child, bringing a faint smile to his face.
Whether the elf was with him or not, Hans would make his way to the forest. He wasn't trying to ditch her or anything, the merc just wanted to get the job done as quickly and efficiently as possible which is how he normally does things....Plus, he was never the greatest at small talks, but if she does try to strike something up, then the guy will speak up...despite how awkward he might end up coming off as.
Soon, the two, assuming that the elf was with him would end up at the forest. There was nothing really special about it, just another ordinary forest. With all the trees around, it made the area look a bit dark, but it wasn't really a hindrance. Walking through the forest, Hans would focus on the list. He then started to walk down a path, not noticing eight bat like creatures slumbering upside down in the trees, but soon they would be aware of the mage's presences.....

Chishio was quiet the entire time the witch was talking. She felt no need to put any input into the conversation, rather- she just didn't feel like answering. Chishio was here more for the mission and reputation rather than actually helping the woman to be honest. But she also wanted some experience as well, in regards to combative situations.
"Ok then. We'll be back soon ma'am." Chishio would state her goodbye to the woman and follow her mercenary ally of the day out the door. The elf would walk alongside Hans, maybe a bit too close. Chishio was attempting to see the list he held in his hands. Without warning, Chishio would snatch the piece of paper from him, 'Well, there we go."
She'd study the list, and attempt to memorize the ingredients before handing it back to Hans.
-7 lavender pops - 1 feather of a firebird - 3 bat eyes
Chishio was quite familiar with all of these substances. The pops have been used by her family, for ailments and curing recipes for medicine. The firebird feather was a bit unfamiliar with her, but she did know of the species. And as for the bats, she had dissected a few before to understand mammal anatomy a bit better. She remembers in a journal sketching its insides with her bloody hands as a small child. She wasn't a mad scientist or that sadistic to abuse one, she just wanted to understand science a bit better. No more or different than a modern student in a college or high school opening up frogs.
"I can dissect the bats we kill. I've dissected them before so, it'll be easy for me not to mess them up. Do we have something to hold them in? We should get them last. We can hold the flowers and feathers in pockets. But the eyes could become squished. We can go to the cave last and I can just hold onto them without dropping."
And with that, Chishio would soon lead them to a meadow. The girl had taken her position now in front of Hans, guiding him to where she felt she could find the plants. She didn't know the exact location of the plants- no. But she had seen a field of them on her way to the woman's home.
Chishio would shove the paper of ingredients towards Hans in a sigh. Then would proceed to bend over and begin to pluck some of the plants right in front of him naively. The rather unnecessarily annoyed individual showed her butt to him while she plucked. Somehow any thought of pride had gone out the window, though she really hadn't thought about this beforehand. So to her, she was simply doing her job.
“When you spend so long trapped in darkness, you find that the darkness begins to stare back.”
While walking, Hans didn't really notice how close Chishio was to him since he was completely focused on the list in his hand. With an eyebrow raised, the man wasn't really sure what to make of these items. He had never heard of lavender pops before and he has never seen a firebird before, but judging by the name, they are probably not all that friendly. The only thing that...sort of made sense to him on the list was the bat eyes, but still these ingredients sound so bizarre. The man honestly thought that magic potions were simpler than this...that doesn't seem to be the case.
Then, suddenly the merc found the paper being snatched from his grasp! "Wha-" Hans blinked a few times before looking at the elf, furrowing his brows a bit...but decided not to get worked up over this. He needed to focus on the mission, and get paid.
The Magic Knight then suggested that she could dissect the bats, causing Hans to give her a small nod. "Yeah, considering how small bats are, I doubt we need anything to hold them in." The merc chimed in just as Chishio continued. He agreed with her idea of going for them last since they definitely seem like the more delicate of these items. They could get lost or squished easily if dropped.
With that out of the way, the duo found themselves in a meadow filled with all sorts of flowers. They looked pretty nice, but his made the dark mage quickly realize something. He didn't exactly know what a lavender pop looked like....
Chishio was now starting to take more charge, causing Hans to tilt his head slightly. With a light sigh, Hans decided to follow without complaining. She probably knew more about this stuff than he did which is why she took charge...he hopes. The girl then suddenly shoved the list of ingredients towards his chest which he managed to grab onto with a look of slight annoyance on his face. "Thanks..." he'd say, his tone remaining the same and not showing any hints of his annoyance. The elf quickly bent over, supposedly to start searching for the flowers....causing Hans to get an accidental glimpse at her rear.
Getting all flustered, his eyes immediately widened as he took a step back, and nearly tripped, but fortunately he managed to catch himself. The merc immediately raised the list up to his face and cleared his throat. It was a good thing the woman seemingly didn't notice, or else Hans wasn't sure what he'd do....
Trying to distract himself from his near blunder, Hans walked over to another part of the meadow and started to search. He...still wasn't exactly sure what to look for, but as he scanned the various flowers, the merc started to notice some purple looking flowers. "Hmm...Could these be...?" Hans crouched down to get a closer look at the beautiful flower, but the moment he tried to get a smell of it. "Agh!" The merc immediately fell back, and quickly covered his nose. "What a strong...odor..." A polite way of saying they smell like SHIT!
The merc slowly sat up and sighed before looking at the flowers with a disgusted expression. Never has he smelt something so fowl before in his life, and he has smelt his fair share of unpleasant things. But seeing as these were the only lavender colored flowers around here..."I think these are our flowers." Hans gestured to them reluctantly. With a sigh, Hans started to gather seven of them or at least some if Chishio decided to help. The stench was awful, but he managed to keep it together, and neatly stuffed them into his pocket, a part of them peeking out so that they won't get crushed.
With that, Hans stood to his feet and nodded. "Guess we're looking for that feather next." If Chishio didn't try taking charge again, Hans would start by heading into an area with more trees considering that's where most birds usually reside.

As Hans continued to pick the rather...foul smelling plants, he would notice a bit of a shift in the mana followed by a voice. "Hello?" It was the witch that sent the merc and magic knight on this mission. "H-hello?" Hans blinked a few tomes before turning to face the knight, assuming she could hear this too. "Ah, looks like my communication spell worked! Unfortunately, it turns out that the firebirds have currently gone into hibernation, so getting their feathers will be impossible at this point. You two may stop looking for those items now. Terribly sorry for the inconvenience." The witch claimed.
"...Right." With the communication spell finish, Hans let out a light sigh. Looks like he won't be getting paid for this one, but that's just how things go sometimes. "Guess we're done here." Hans would say to the knight before getting up, and heading out of the forest, off to do other things.
